Cold. Cloudy. Wet.?

It was Seattle weather in Columbus Monday night, and the University of Washington looked right at home.

The Huskies shut out No. 3 Ohio State 4-0 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, holding the Buckeyes without a shot on goal and handing Ohio State its second straight loss of the season.

The Buckeyes opened the season 5-0 but are now 5-2-1 overall and 0-2-1 in Big Ten play.

Washington outshot Ohio State 18-4, putting eight shots on goal while also holding a 13-2 advantage in corner kicks.

“They had their foot on the gas from the opening whistle, and it took us a little bit to get into the game,” head coach Brian Maisonneuve said.

Maisonneuve said the Buckeyes needed to break through Washington’s initial pressure to open up the field, but Ohio State struggled to do so.

Ohio State’s night got more difficult when the Buckeyes were reduced to 10 men late in the first half.

Junior midfielder Nick Skubis received his first yellow card in the 33rd minute before picking up a second in the 44th, earning a red card.

It marked the second straight game a Buckeye received a red card after senior defender Joel Demian was sent off against Rutgers, which defeated Ohio State 2-1, on Friday.

“Two red cards in two games is unacceptable,” Maisonneuve said.

Washington senior defender Harrison Bertos scored between Skubis’ two yellow cards in the 39th minute, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

Down a goal and a man at halftime, Ohio State had to adjust its approach for the second half.

Maisonneuve said the Buckeyes couldn’t afford to push numbers forward too early.

“You can’t open up too early, ’cause then you’re gonna get punished,” Maisonneuve said.

Washington added to its lead when junior midfielder Zach Ramsey scored off a free kick in the 51st minute.

“I like the way we started the second half, and then we gave up that set piece goal,” Maisonneuve said. “That one really hurt.”

The Huskies added two more goals before the final whistle, including an Ohio State own goal in the 89th minute.

The Buckeyes also lost graduate defender Elijah Bishop and starting senior goalkeeper Patrick McLaughlin to injuries during the match.

Senior forward Isaiah Chisolm, who scored seven goals in Ohio State’s first four matches, has missed the past four games with an injury.

“[Chisolm’s] a big piece of what we do, but, I mean, we had to play with a little bit more confidence early on,” Maisonneuve said. “Again, we were a little bit hesitant.”

The Buckeyes return to action Friday when they face George Mason on the road at 7 p.m.
