Ohio State men’s soccer head coach Brian Maisonneuve believed his team deserved more Tuesday night.
Despite putting more shots on goal than No. 4 Indiana, the Buckeyes couldn’t find the back of the net, falling 1-0 to the Hoosiers on a goal from junior forward Easton Bogard.
“I thought we deserved more,” Maisonneuve said, pointing to the Buckeyes’ missed scoring opportunities as a reason he believed they deserved a draw. “A draw, I think, would have been fair.”
Ohio State finished with nine shots, including four on goal, while Indiana recorded 11 shots and three on goal.
Senior midfielder Ryan Hannosh also hit the post with a shot in the 52nd minute, one of several scoring opportunities Ohio State failed to convert Tuesday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
“We got to keep a couple more of those chances on frame, and maybe it’s a different result,” Maisonneuve said. “But I thought the performance overall was pretty good.”
Hannosh said the Buckeyes should have been able to capitalize on their scoring opportunities.
“Four shots on goal, but we realistically should have had six,” Hannosh said.
While Ohio State had scoring chances, Indiana made it hard for the Buckeyes to get behind its defense.
Maisonneuve said the Hoosiers dropped their defensive line, forcing Ohio State to find other ways to create offensive chances.
“Credit to them, they dropped a line, didn’t allow us to get behind,” Maisonneuve said. “Some of our service and just placing this in the box had to be better.”
Maisonneuve said Ohio State lost track of an Indiana player inside the box on the Hoosiers’ lone goal, which ended up being the difference in the match.
“You’re playing a good team. Margins are really slim,” Maisonneuve said.
The Buckeyes pushed for an equalizer in the final 10 minutes of the second half but failed to find the back of the net.
Despite the loss, Maisonneuve said he believed Ohio State played well enough to earn a better result.
“I’m frustrated now, and I’ll be frustrated in the morning,” Maisonneuve said.
With the regular season nearing its end, Hannosh said the Buckeyes are focused on extending their season, particularly for the team’s seniors.
“Rally around the seniors,” Hannosh said. “Could be three games left and we’re gonna do everything we can to continue our season.”
Ohio State returns to action Saturday, traveling to College Park, Maryland, to face No. 11 Maryland at Ludwig Field at 7 p.m.?
