Students will be able to drop off any trash, furniture, cardboard boxes and other recyclable items in designated locations near campus as thousands move in and out of their dorms and houses around Columbus.?
The City of Columbus will offer nearly 50 temporary drop-off sites to reduce illegal dumping, support sustainability and make the moving-in and out process easier before the fall semester begins, in partnership with the Office of Student Life and the University District Organization. The locations will be open from? July 24 to Aug. 11., according to a press release obtained by the Lantern.
“Moving is an exciting time for students and we want to make it as easy as possible for them to be good neighbors throughout the process,” Rochelle Toth, Community Outreach and Engagement Manager in the Office of Student Life at The Ohio State University, said in the release. “These convenient collection sites give students easy and responsible options for disposing of unwanted items, while helping keep the University District clean, reducing waste and supporting our shared commitment to sustainability.”
Furniture and other items in good shape will be donated for reuse. Students can also drop off items such as mattresses, furniture, electronics and food scraps at the city’s Waste and Reuse Convenience centers at 2100 Alum Creek Dr. and 1550 Georgesville Rd for reuse, recycling and donation, the press release stated.
“The city’s Refuse Collection operations help thousands of students move responsibly each summer using dumpsters set up throughout the neighborhood to collect trash, recyclables and items that can be donated for reuse,” Mayor Andrew J. Ginther said in the release. “It is a concentrated environmentally friendly effort to divert tons of materials from the landfill and advance the city’s and the university’s sustainability goals.”
Nora Gerber, the executive director of the University District Organization, said in the release that the priority of the annual move in and out time is to provide residents with the proper resources and information to make their transitions as smooth as possible.
“We encourage anyone moving to plan ahead and utilize the added drop-off locations for donations and recycling to maximize our diversion from the landfill,” Gerber said. “We are incredibly grateful for our continued partnership with The Ohio State University and the City of Columbus, whose shared commitment is vital to keeping our neighborhood clean, vibrant and welcoming.”

According to the press release, on-street dumpster locations may require temporary parking restrictions. To avoid a parking ticket, students and others should be aware of temporary No Stopping signs enforced around these locations.
